A Mississippi home

standing on higher ground

I felt connected to my family doing this portrait of one of my cousin's homes in Mississippi.  Although I could not be present for the Arceneaux Family Reunion (my middle name and link to some "artsy" genes) this month, painting allowed me a way to feel connected.

I fondly remember playing under houses on stilts during summer vacations as a child.  We would dig human-sized holes in the sand.  Create worlds to play in.  Make a pancake assembly line.  Jump off the deck into the sand.  Look for sand crabs at night.  Eat candy.  Search for seashells.  Play poker.  Eat peaches.  Boil cauldrons of shrimp.

Nana, second from left, with some of her siblings.  She is eldest of 8.

Can you spot Waldo (Nana)?

My mom and some of her sibs.

I missed seeing this family.
And I missed my shrimp po'boy and Barq's in a bottle,
in front of the sparkling Gulf.
